Oracle Enterprise Linux 7 Installation


This article describes a step by step procedure to perform the basic installation of Oracle Enterprise Linux 7 with pictorial representations.

1. Boot the Operating System Installation media. On the boot screen select Install Oracle Linux 7.0 by using keyboard and press the Enter button.

2. Select the language that you want to use during installation process and click on Continue button.

3. Now you will be presented with the Installation Summary screen as below. Please complete all the configurations for marked icons by selecting each before continuing to next step. Remaining all unmarked icons will have default configurations.

By clicking on DATE & TIME you will be presented with the below screen. Select the time zone and click on Done button at the top of window to return to previous menu.

Choose the key board layout from the list by clicking on + button. Now click on Done button.

The default language is English (United States). If you want, select an additional language and click on Done button to return to previous window.

Click on Done button to accept the default. If you want, make changes accordingly and Click on Done button at the top of window.

Choose Base environment as Server with GUI and select the required package groups from the listed menu at right side of the window. Once you made the selection click on Done button.

By selecting the Installation Destination, you will be presented with below screen. If you are happy to use automatic partitioning of the whole disk, click the Done button to return to the previous screen. Otherwise select I will configure partition and click on Done button.
Here you can customize disk partition by selecting the Standard Partition from the drop down menu. Click on + to add partitions.

A root partition:
This is where “/” (the root directory) is located. In this setup, all files (except those stored in /boot) are on the root partition. A 3.0 GB partition allows you to install a minimal installation, while a 5.0 GB root partition lets you perform a full installation.

A Swap partition:
Here the swap space in Linux is used when the amount of physical memory (RAM) is full. If the system needs more memory resources and the RAM is full, inactive pages in memory are moved to the swap space.
Swapping is necessary for two important reasons.
1) When the system requires more memory than is physically available, the kernel swaps out less used pages and gives memory to the current application (process) that needs the memory immediately.
2) A significant number of the pages used by an application during its startup phase may only be used for initialization and then never used again. The system can swap out those pages and free the memory for other applications or even for the disk cache.
Here you can allocate the swap for normal server as,
Swap space equal to Double the RAM size (if RAM < 2GB)
Swap space equal to RAM size (if RAM > 2GB)

A Home partition:
To store user data separately from system data, create a dedicated partition within a volume group for the /home directory. This will enable you to upgrade or reinstall Red Hat Enterprise Linux without erasing user data files.

After completing your manual partitioning click on Done button to return previous menu.
By clicking on Network & Hostname you will be presented with the below screen. Please enter hostname and click on Configure button.

Enter the details for network configuration and click on Save button. Now click on Done button to return to previous menu.

4. Now click on Begin Installation button at the bottom of the window.

5. Here you must provide root password and optionally you can create a user by selecting the respective fields.

6. Provide the password for system root user and create a user optionally as shown below.

7. The installation process will continue as show in below. Wait for the Installation to complete.

8. On the installation complete window click on Reboot button.

9. Next the below screen will be shows as below. Please click on LICENSE INFORMATION and accept the license agreement. Click on Done button.

10. Now click on Finish Configuration button.

11. After the first reboot, you will be presented with the below screen. On the Kdump configuration screen click on Forward button to accept the default configuration.

12. Select the desired options for ULN software update and click on Forward button.

13. On the Finish Software Updates screen click on Forward button.

14. After the reboot the below login screen will be displayed. Enter the User name and Password and click on Login button.

15. The desktop of the installed linux server will be show as below. Now the system is ready for use.
This completes the Oracle Linux Server Installation.
